Schedule

The Australian Government Spatial Data Schedule ('the Schedule') is a single authoritative source of information about spatial datasets available under the terms of the Australian Government Policy on Spatial Data Access and Pricing ('the Policy').

To be eligible for listing on the Schedule, a dataset must meet the following Policy conditions:

  • available at the marginal cost of transfer (e.g. free online or nominally $99 a CD)
  • free of restrictions on value-adding or third party transfer
  • intellectual property is vested in the Commonwealth
  • distributed under a licence (such as the OSDM standard licence) that acknowledges Commonwealth intellectual property and absolves the Commonwealth from any liability.

The Schedule:

  • is available online in an easy-to-read presentation
  • is the single authoritative list of Australian Government spatial datasets available under the Policy
  • provides information about the custodial agency, title and policy status (Schedule/Auxiliary) for each dataset
  • links to the metadata record of a dataset and, where applicable, a download location
  • filters to view data by agency, ISO Topic Category, Schedule/Auxiliary List/Both enabling agencies to quickly generate a list of their own datasets available under the terms of the Policy
  • provides an option to create a printable report of search queries
  • records filters applied both on-screen and on printed reports
  • is audited annually to assess dataset compliance with the Policy and consistency of information advertised about datasets

Auxiliary List

In 2004 Australian Government agencies identified that a number of datasets listed on the Schedule were available under the general conditions outlined in the Policy but were not fully compliant with the Policy as they were subject to some constraints. For instance, a dataset may be available free over the Internet but has restrictions on third party distribution or shared intellectual property rights. As a result the Spatial Data Management Group created a supplementary list to the Schedule called the Auxiliary List. All datasets that were not fully compliant with the Policy were either transferred to this List or removed from the Schedule.

Datasets identified for early inclusion on the Auxiliary List were data series that were developed through Australian Government contributions to national or international programs. Given that the Commonwealth was not the sole owner of the intellectual property these datasets were considered to be ineligible for listing on the Schedule.

OSDM regularly audits the Schedule. The OSDM Schedule Database supports both the Schedule and Auxiliary Lists. Public access to this list is available through the Schedule search facility on the OSDM web site.
